Kevin Cheng Ka-wing launched his singing career after graduating from university in 1992. That was the year he signed a recording contract with PolyGram under the recommendation of his singing teacher, Tai See-chung.
He began learning singing in Form Two and left Hong Kong after completing Form Five studies at Wah Yan College, Hong Kong. He completed Grades 12 and 13 in Canada before moving on to undergraduate studies at the California State of Northridge University where he majored in civil engineering.
While he was abroad, he continued to practise his singing. He returned to Hong Kong during Christmas and summer holidays to hone his singing skills with Tai.
Cheng made his musical breakthrough when his song Thinking Every Minute was included in a compilation album released in 1993.
