Lai King still mosquito hot spot

Lai King in the New Territories remains a cause of concern for dengue fever after recording the highest level of mosquito infestation for the fourth consecutive month.

The September ovitrap index - which reflects distribution of dengue-fever carrying Aedes albopictus mosquitoes - was released yesterday, with a figure of 33.3 per cent in Lai King.

The index across the city fell to 15.9 per cent, compared with 17.7 per cent in August, 21.1 per cent in July, 22 per cent in June and 31.6 per cent in May.

Ten other locations exceeded the alert level of 20 per cent. These were Sheung Wan, Cheung Sha Wan, Ho Man Tin, Kowloon City North, Shamshuipo East, Diamond Hill, Tai Po North, Fan Ling, Tsing Yi, and Tuen Mun South.

Philip Ho Yuk-yin, a Food and Environmental Hygiene Department consultant , said: 'We should stay alert and keep up anti-mosquito efforts as dengue fever could still strike around this time of the year.'

The department named four places in Lai King as worrying: the area near Ching Lai Court along Lai King Hill Road, slopes near Lai King Estate and Highland Park and areas along Lai Cho Road, and Wah Yiu Road near Lai Yue Estate.
