The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has signed an agreement with universities from the mainland and Singapore to develop hi-tech communications research.
The deal established a wide range of areas in which HKUST will co-operate with the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) of Singapore.
The three institutions will carry out joint research projects, apply for government funding, exchange students at post-graduate level and host seminars together.
They will also seek funding from the 863 Programme, which allocates resources for hi-tech research on the mainland.
It is expected that the institutions will conduct research in their areas of expertise such as the Beyond Third Generation and Ultra Wideband communications technologies.
The signing ceremony was attended by Khaled Ben Letaief, head of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering Department at HKUST, Li Shaoqian, director of the National Communications Laboratory at UESTC, and Er Meng Hwa, deputy president and dean of electrical and electronic engineering at NTU.
