Sixty-two couples from Zhejiang province began a romantic tour to Hong Kong yesterday by attending a mass wedding ceremony at the Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui. Wearing traditional red jackets, the couples from Hangzhou, most of them newlyweds, kissed against the backdrop of Victoria Harbour. The ceremony was jointly organised by the Hangzhou Youth Federation and the Hong Kong Tourism Board. Each couple paid about 6,000 yuan for the five-day trip. They will enjoy a dinner cruise tonight. They were awarded certificates of attendance by Canto-pop singer Karen Mok Man-wai. Zhao Jian, 24 , said it was the first trip to Hong Kong for him and his bride, Wang Yingjie. 'Hong Kong is a romantic city,' he said. 'Besides sightseeing, we are planning to go shopping here. We intend to buy electrical home appliances and cosmetics.' Zhou Liqiao, 27, said he and his wife, Hu Dongli, had been looking forward to visiting Hong Kong because it was a prosperous city with an international outlook. The couple said shopping topped their agenda for the trip, with their sights set on a digital camera and souvenirs. Bonnie Ngan Suet-fong, general manager of corporate communications for the Tourism Board, said it was the third year such a wedding ceremony had been held in Hong Kong for mainland couples. The couples are due to visit Macau on Friday before returning to Hangzhou the next day.
