Pop star and actress Kelly Chen Wai-lam has been named a 2004 Outstanding Young Person of the World for her contribution to children, world peace and human rights.

A surprised and happy Chen, 31, burst into tears several times while expressing her gratitude yesterday.

'I will help more children reach their roads to success,' said Chen - the first Hong Kong woman and the 12th Hong Kong person to win this award in the 34 years it has been running.

The first Hong Kong person to receive the international award was Pao Ping-wing in 1983.
