Peter Millward looks down at the green field of Victoria Park from his Causeway Bay penthouse studio. On Sunday, he'll be stepping out of his tower and on to the stage of the Rockit Festival - to play guitar in the new Hong Kong left-field dub act, The Bass Cadets.

'We were all at Rockit last year and said we've got to do something for 2004,' Millward says of the formation of The Bass Cadets especially for this year's festival. 'We thought that Rockit was such a brilliant thing for live music and all the musicians in Hong Kong should support it.'

The 45-year-old producer is well-known locally through his music production house Drum Music, which does extensive work writing tunes for the advertising industry. He's equally an artist in his own right with his electronic music collective, Celestial.

Since 1996, Celestial has blazed a trail for the Asian chill-out genre, through its pan-Asian dubscapes of folk melodies set against urban, dance-floor beats.

Last night, Millward launched Celestial's newest album, Hong Kong Dub Station, which grew into an unofficial opening party for the Rockit Festival.

The party was a reflection of Celestial's collaborative spirit, with a gathering of Hong Kong creativity, including music video artists Atomic Sushi, graphic design house China Stylus, independent magazine Robot and local record label Disuye - as well as classical musicians such as shakuhachi (Japanese flute) player Sunny Yeung, who collaborated on the album. It was a far cry from the low-key opening celebrations of Rockit 2003, when a group of rock stars converged on a small SoHo bar for a quiet drink.

The night also featured the debut performance of The Bass Cadets, warming up for their Sunday slot. Completely different to Millward's Celestial project, this is a so-called Hong Kong super group that's emerged from the creative nucleus of the Yumla music bar.
