Crowd laps up chance to see local bands at three-day festival
Novice bands and high-powered local acts kicked off the first day of the city's only outdoor music festival yesterday at Victoria Park.
The three-day Rockit Music Festival opened at midday with Rockit Youth, featuring five teen bands in the Spy Marquee. They were followed by local bands and performers such as Uncle Joe, King Ly Chee and Josie Ho Chiu-yee on the main stage.
Zara Hannaford, 15, a singer with Odyssey, said that despite the small audience, performing at Rockit was great fun.
Joe Slater, 15, of We Shot Kennedy, enjoyed his first performance on a bigger stage and said the band hoped to perform on the main stage next year.
Rick Cumes, who is in charge of Rockit Youth, said a smaller crowd was in fact good for the young performers.
'They are nervous because they have never played at a music festival before. They would be overwhelmed by the atmosphere. An early slot is good for them,' he said.
