It is 30 years since Muhammad Ali recaptured the world heavyweight boxing title by defeating champion George Foreman in one of the most dramatic sporting events of modern times. Ali, a 32-year-old underdog going into the fight, astonished the world with a stunning eighth-round knockout of the previously unbeaten Foreman.

Billed as the 'Rumble in the Jungle' - the bout took place in Kinshasa, Zaire. The fight was a David and Goliath battle, culminating in the triumph of ring savvy and experience over brute strength.

Sports Illustrated writer Mark Kram described it as 'Ali in his most cerebral fight - a virtuoso performance over the stone-age matter of Foreman'.

It also marked the culmination of a seven-year comeback by Ali - after he had been stripped of the title in 1967 for refusing induction into the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

Ali had become champion as Cassius Clay in 1964. He had converted to Islam and adopted the name Muhammad Ali in 1965. For the next two years, he proved one of the fastest and most skilled heavyweights ever.

Ali was allowed to fight again in 1970. His long comeback included two points losses: to heavyweight champion Joe Frazier in the 1971 'Fight of the Century' and to leading contender Ken Norton in 1973.
