The past decade has seen an explosion in the provision of services and products aimed at children, not least of which has been the number of extra-curricular activities that have sprung up all over Hong Kong catering for schoolchildren, toddlers, infants and even newborn babies.
There is a vast choice of activities with varying methodologies and fees.
At the one end is one-on-one private tuition, where fees range from $500 to $1,200 an hour. At the other are ambitious group activities run on a charity basis, which are sometimes free of charge.
In the middle are non-profit-making organisations offering group activities and the private school sector, whose fees range from $110 to $500 an hour.
In addition to the standard fare of ballet, violin, piano, horse-riding and tennis, today's parents and, it is hoped, their children too, are now choosing from an eclectic menu ranging from Kumon, etiquette and elocution lessons for those seeking academic excellence and finesse, to African drums, electric guitar, water-polo and break-dancing.
Then there is meditation and yoga for those in search of a calmer karma.
