I have tried to download the Windows XP Service Pack 2  twice without success. Each time, after completing  the installation,  the Installation History shows failure.  Any idea what the problem is? My computer is a Sony Vaio  with Windows XP Home Edition.

I spoke to someone at Microsoft and they had a simple answer: get a free CD-Rom and install the Service Pack from that. You can order the CD-Rom for free from the following website: www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default…  or you call the customer service centre on 23889600. 

If, however, your problem is not the download, you may have to go back to where you bought the Sony and ask for help (assuming you bought it here). Most companies are happy enough to help because they would like you to come back. If they are not happy to do something for you, you at least now know where not to buy your next machine. 


Standards dilemma for mobile businessmen

I travel frequently to South Korea on business and, because of the different mobile phone standards, am forced to keep two mobile phones, one for Hong Kong and one for Korea. 
They are incompatible with each other and have different numbers. This can get very irritating and inconvenient, and often creates problems communicating with clients around the region, such as over which number they should use to contact me. 
Is there a solution, such as  one phone with one number that would work anywhere? I understand that  Nokia and Samsung are planning to bring out 'world phones' that should work anywhere with one number (working on both GSM and W-CDMA standards), but nobody at any of Hong Kong's mobile service providers has any idea about this.  
Given the number of  people I see travelling to South Korea on business, surely there are others in this same situation.

The holy grail of mobile telephony is to have one phone that you can use anywhere in the world. That day will come, but it is not here yet. You are  correct when you say that several companies are working on what are called 'world phones', but there is little out there to be used right now. 
Samsung, for example, says it has a phone called the Samsung SCH-A79,  but it is very difficult to find a reference for it on the web. The phone is said to support both GSM (most of the world) and CDMA (United States and parts of Asia, including South Korea). Other companies, such as Motorola and Nokia, are said to have projects under way, but there is not a lot of information about them so far.  
Until that happens, you may have to come up with what we commonly call a kludge. I asked a businessman who travels regularly between Hong Kong and South Korea,  and he said he carried  a Hutchison CDMA phone and  a GSM phone, and when he goes to South Korea he diverts the GSM phone to the CDMA one. 
Anyone who rings his Hong Kong GSM number will be re-routed to his Hong Kong CDMA phone, which he can use in South Korea. 
He said  Hutchison gave him instructions on using the phone in South Korea, because getting the settings right is not easy.
It's not an ideal solution, but others I know either put up with two phones or do nothing at all.



If at second try  you don't succeed, get the CD-Rom
