Authorities in Henan province have been criticised by mainland media and relatives of the miners killed in last week's Daping Mine tragedy for withholding information and denying them access to the site.

The death toll increased to 82 yesterday with the discovery of three more bodies.

Officials had erected a tight security perimeter about 1km from the site, refusing to allow journalists or relatives to enter, while little information had been forthcoming about the latest rescue efforts, China News Service reported yesterday.

It said authorities took away relatives as soon as they saw them speak to journalists. The report quoted an unnamed relative as saying families of the dead and injured were not being told where the bodies were being kept or where the injured were being treated. 'It is very difficult for relatives to visit,' the relative said.

The report said mainland journalists had been 'persuaded' to wait for information at a temporary news centre set up in Xinmi , many kilometres from the site.
