Hong Kong people using the Mass Transit Railway Corporation will be hit with a new $10 charge - starting from next week.

Local radio reported on Friday that the MTRC was planning to introduce a $10 flat fee to passengers who get in and out of the same station after staying inside the gates for 20 minutes or longer.

The charge, which will come in next Monday, is designed to make sure couriers and passengers don't get away with paying minimum fares by exiting from the same station that they used to enter after taking long journeys on the train.

Elderly passengers aged 65 or above will not be subject to the new surcharge, local radio reported.

.
Legislator Andrew Cheng Kar-foo, said the MTRC should have brought the matter before the Legislative Council for discussion.
He said the new charge was equivalent to a fare increase.

But MTRC corporate relations manager May Wong said the new policy would be fair to normal users of the MTRC.
