The city's only home for English-speaking elderly has been flooded with donations and offers of help since it revealed it needed more than $700,000 for renovations.
About $219,000 has poured in since the plight of the China Coast Community Home was highlighted in a report in the South China Morning Post last month.
But the 25-year-old Kowloon Tong home, which has 36 residents with an average age of 82, is still struggling to raise $500,000 more to refurbish its kitchen and fix a leaking roof.
'We have been overwhelmed by the response we have had after the story appeared in the Post. So many people have given money,' general manager Vijai Singh said.
'We've had cheques for $300, $500 and for $50,000. I am very touched to find that Hong Kong still has such a lot of generous people.'
Ms Singh said one donor handed over a cheque for $100,000. 'I took him around the home and he said he had an elderly father who was living at home with them.'
