Police have seized 71,000 tablets of Erimin 5 - the largest haul in Hong Kong of the increasingly popular drug - in raids against a West Kowloon syndicate suspected of supplying the drug. In all of 1999, police seized only one tablet of the drug, which had since grown in popularity among young people in Southeast Asia, Superintendent Tsang Ka-kin, of the Narcotics Bureau, said. 'After taking Ecstasy, one is said to suffer a bout of depression on the road to normalcy. Erimin 5 is the drug taken by the users to avoid going through the depression,' Chief Inspector Tam Siu-on said. He said a surge in the use of the drug was expected as word spread about its effects. Police raided a residence on Ash Street in Mongkok just after midnight on Sunday. They arrested a man surnamed Li, 22, and a woman surnamed Chan, 20, as they tried to leave the building. Police said Li and Chan were key members of the syndicate. The woman was found to be carrying two plastic bags containing 30 grams believed to be ketamine. Other dangerous drugs seized during the raid included 5.5kg of what seemed to be ketamine powder, 1.5kg of suspected Ice, 1,700 tablets of Ecstasy and 20,000 tablets of Erimin 5. A search of a residential unit on Nathan Road in Yau Ma Tei led to the seizure of 28 plastic bags containing 28,000 tablets of suspected Ecstasy and 51,000 tablets of Erimin 5. Mr Tam said it was the largest seizure of Erimin 5 in Hong Kong. Police records show 548 tablets were seized in 2000, 13,444 in 2001, 30,071 in 2002, 12,872 last year and 86,216 so far this year. Police estimate the latest haul could have been sold for $6.6 million in the local market. Erimin 5, which is a tranquilliser and is legal in some countries, is an illicit dangerous drug in Hong Kong. A source said some of the tablets sold in Hong Kong come from Taiwan. In a separate operation, police arrested two Ghanaian men, aged 25 and 26, in a hotel on Waterloo Road in Yau Ma Tei at 1.30pm on Sunday. The 26-year-old man was found to be carrying a bag with 2.2kg of suspected heroin.
