Last week was a black week for Shanghai's most popular market for fake products, where you could buy a 'Rolex' for US$20 and a 'Gucci' bag for US$12.

Teams of police and inspectors from the city's Industrial and Commercial Bureau (ICB) descended on the market in Xiangyang Road, just off the main shopping street of Huaihai Road, and confiscated box-loads of products.

'Our crackdown will be bigger and tougher than the one in Beijing,' said Gu Renda, deputy director of the bureau. 'Theirs covered 25 brands and ours 40 - including clothes, bags, hats, watches, perfume and cosmetics by Louis Vuitton, Chanel and other famous names.

'If we find fakes in a shop or a stall more than twice, we will close it down. This group of 40 brands is just the first batch. A second and third group will follow, and we will extend the crackdown to all points of sale.'

Since it opened in October 2000, the Xiangyang Road market has been a must-see for thousands of foreign tourists who visit Shanghai, enabling them to load up with famous-brand gifts for friends and family.

In response to pressure from manufacturers and foreign governments, there have been crackdowns before. But this time, the traders fear it is for real.
