Paper 1 Narration

Narration is the most frequently tested essay type in Paper 1 Writing. Future narrative questions will not touch on any life-threatening crisis, but rather on a moral dilemma.

Candidates are strongly advised to refrain from using expressions blacklisted by the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority (HKEAA).

Essential elements of a good narrative

Good beginning:

There are countless ways to start your story. The following are  some guidelines to help you make a good start to suit your writing purposes.

Ordinary person having an extraordinary experience

Example: I am an ordinary person leading an ordinary life. But even an ordinary person has at least a day which is not ordinary. To me it came when I least expected it.

Addressing the reader

Example: You would not believe this, but what I am going to tell you did happen.

Setting the mood and introducing main characters

Example: 'Susan, I have  something to tell you. Listen! Something strange happened.' I grabbed Susan's arm tightly.  'Please be gentle, you are hurting me. Keep cool! I am all ears,' Susan said  angrily/softly/warmly.

Real or not

Example: I am still wondering whether it is real or not. Even in my wildest dreams, I had never faced such horror before. It all seemed like a dream, but I am sure it was real.

(Note: Don't use 'Never had I been so close to the verge of death'. It is one of the expressions blacklisted by HKEAA.)

Good ending:

For a question presenting a moral dilemma, the best way to end your story is to say what you have learned from the experience.

Examples:

After this incident/experience, I promised myself that I would never do things recklessly/without care.

From this experience, I learned an invaluable lesson - I had to think carefully before I did anything.

After this, I could not agree more with the saying that experience was a good teacher, but she sent in terrific bills.
