One of Hong Kong's largest non-governmental organisations, looking after 6,000 mentally handicapped people and their parents, is seeking to employ a replacement chief executive.

Now almost 40 years old, the Hong Chi Association serves Hong Kong's mentally handicapped on an annual budget of more than $400 million. Its facilities include 13 special schools and 51 adult service units. The chief executive's job is to be the leader of one of Hong Kong's most admired non-governmental organisations, according to Hong Chi's chairman, John Budge.

'This is the type of job that many in the field would consider to be the pinnacle of their career,' Mr Budge said.

With more than 1,000 staff, the chief executive must be a natural leader with the skills to carry out the role of principal ambassador of Hong Chi in the community. The person must also respond to the challenges of finding work opportunities for those leaving the association's schools or centres and establishing Hong Chi Industries, a business dedicated to creating employment opportunities for the mentally handicapped.
