Sainkho Namtchylak is an eccentric nightingale. Alternating between breathy whimpers and hysteric squeaks, her vocals are an audio guide through Who Stole the Sky? - an unusual and wild odyssey. Born in the tiny Republic of Tuva - located within the Siberian border - the 47-year-old shaven-headed singer studied music in Moscow before launching a singing career in the west. The album, sung in Tuvan, Russian and English, reflects her multicultural influences. In the opener, Music Mail to Tuva, her vocals float in a singing chant alongside a melodic flute. In Digital Mutation, she leads audiences through a cyberspace journey with robot-like vocals backed by drum and bass rhythms. Namtchylak ends the cultural and musical journey with the final track, Temple of Majtreja, a 20-minute piece which pays tribute to her motherland. While the album may not appeal to mainstream tastes, it is a treat for those who long for a new sonic experience.
