Dali no match for real madrid

What makes a better mantelpiece decoration - art ... or a football?

The Spanish Chamber of Commerce held a dinner on Friday at the Conrad Hotel to celebrate Spanish heritage. Hundreds of A-list Spaniards enjoyed their country's cuisine.

An auction was held, with proceeds going to help people with cancer, but Salvador Dali (pictured) was probably rolling in his grave. The two items up for bid were a football signed by the entire Real Madrid team and a Dali sculpture called La Faun. Perhaps the intention was that the sculpture would score the most money; after all, the eccentric Spaniard was not only famous for that moustache - his art was pretty good too.

But it seems football culture has usurped art culture, as the football went for almost $40,000 while the sculpture didn't even make $30,000. There's no doubt the proud new owners will have one thing in common - they won't be kicking their acquisitions around the garden.
