Shanghai wants more talent from Hong Kong to bolster businesses in the city, with one in 10 companies expressing an interest in hiring local residents, Party Secretary Chen Liangyu has revealed.
While some 1,278 skilled workers from Hong Kong were already employed in Shanghai, Mr Chen said that many more would be required.
'We want to hire more. Ten per cent of companies - both state-owned and private - have told us that they want to recruit from Hong Kong, and Shanghai welcomes them here.'
He said Hong Kong workers who were already employed in the city had proved their worth.
'The numbers are small, but the implications are far-reaching. There is a doctor from Hong Kong who works in a hospital here, specialising in treatment using humour, which has been very successful,' he said.
'There is also a theatre run by Hong Kong people. The bookings are full until April next year.'
He said Shanghai was hoping to help develop the skills of workers from Hong Kong, but did not reveal how many more the city would accept.
