Drunk driver who injured youths is jailed

An interior designer who was more than four times above the blood alcohol limit when he crashed his car and injured two youths in Central has been jailed for two months and fined $1,000.

Principal Magistrate Ian Candy passed an immediate custodial sentence on Andre David Morkel, a shareholder and employee of RHK Design, despite pleas by lawyer Gary Plowman SC for a community service order.

In Eastern Court, Morkel admitted drink driving and careless driving. The 29-year-old had 211 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood when he crashed his car on Upper Albert Road on July 26.

He struck two 17-year-old youths, Cheng Chi-wan and Mok Tsz-chung. Chi-wan spent 54 days in hospital. Tsz-chung is still being treated in the MacLehose Medical Rehabilitation Centre.
