Hussain Butt entered the Hong Kong record books by becoming the first player to hit a triple century in the local leagues when he smacked a savage and unbeaten 311 yesterday.

Butt hammered 36 sixes and a dozen fours in his memorable knock for Hong Kong University in a 35-over Saturday League match against HKCC Nomads at Hong Kong Cricket Club.

'It happens some times when everything goes your way. I was scoring 18 or 19 runs every over. This is the first time I have scored 300 in my career and I'm really happy to set a new Hong Kong record,' said Pakistani Butt, delighted that his rich vein of form was continuing. Last week, he was named Player of the Tournament at the Hong Kong International Sixes.

Opening the innings, Butt was soon in full flow as he pummelled the bowling all around the ground. He reached 300 in the last of the 35 overs. A dozen balls were lost during his innings, many of them hit on to the adjoining Wong Nei Chung Gap Road.

HKCC officials later postponed today's Sunday League match between HKCC Optimists and Vagabonds. Butt turns out for Vagabonds in the Sunday League. The Gap Road club said they were reviewing the 'public safety' issue. But one wag remarked: 'Maybe they don't want to play against him.'

HKU reached 399 for four and then dismissed Nomads for 302 in the 27th over to win by 97 runs.

'I knew scoring a 100 would not be enough for the rest of our batting is quite fragile.
