In the market

A friend warned me about going to the wrong noodle stall at the Haiphong Road temporary market in Tsim Sha Tsui. She said one vendor tells unsuspecting customers his stall is the one famous for beef ball noodles, when in reality, Tak Fatt Beef Balls - the right place - is nearby. Here's a tip: look for people eating the popular dish from orange bowls and with yellow spoons.

The beef balls, flavoured with dried tangerine peel and fresh coriander, are served with cho mein (wide egg noodles), mein (thin egg noodles), mai fun (thin rice noodles) or ho fun (wide rice noodles). They have the correct 'bouncy' texture and are a bargain at $15 a bowl.

To find the place, go into the Haiphong Road entrance of the market (between Kowloon Park Drive and Ashley Road) and walk past the flower stalls into the area serving food. Tak Fatt Beef Balls, Haiphong Road temporary market, tel: 2376 1179.
