A Vietnamese illegal immigrant who escaped from Mongkok police station was recaptured in Tsz Wan Shan yesterday. His brief taste of freedom ended when detectives from Mongkok raided a flat in Lok Hop House at Tsz Lok Estate about 5.30pm. The 27-year-old escapee was kept briefly at the Tsz Wan Shan police station before being sent back to Mongkok police station for further questioning. A police spokeswoman said last night it was too early to tell whether the illegal immigrant would face further charges for fleeing. The man escaped from a temporary detention room at the Mongkok station, in Playing Field Road, about 11.30am on Saturday. He had been detained on Friday for possessing someone else's identity card. Police are continuing their investigations into the circumstances of his escape. But it was thought he might have slipped out while relieving himself or hidden himself among a group from the same cell when they were escorted out for medical checks. It is believed the man hid in the station after leaving the cell and waited for the best time to flee. When police realised he was missing, they mounted a search of the station and surrounding area using sniffer dogs. In August last year a robbery suspect escaped moments before he was to be fingerprinted. He was also recaptured two days later.
