JOAN Chan (''Pity expats with a bad attitude,'' South China Morning Post, October 8) is right: people who are dissatisfied with Hong Kong should re-examine their experience here.
Hong Kong is truly heaven on Earth. I propose that Westerners who spend time in Lan Kwai Fong moaning about how great their home countries are consider instead the following blessings provided by the ''Fragrant Harbour'': A glorious city-wide lack of discrimination against non-Cantonese-speaking Chinese, non-Chinese Asians, and Westerners. A sufficient number of taxis, all of which are manned by scrupulously honest taxi drivers, and a Transport Advisory Committee and Executive Council which only raise taxi rates after judicious scrutiny of all facts concerned. A postal service which only raises its rates after similarly sapient number-crunching, always keeping an eye out to what is fair. A virtuous phone company painstaking in its adherence to moral standards. A banking system set up to benefit the consumer at every turn. A laborious respect for the regulations prohibiting smoking in movie theatres. A government and populace that place environmental concerns high on their priority lists.
