A sense of humour and patience play a key role when dealing with children
Young Post: How did you get started as a kindergarten teacher?
Ubalde: I was born in Luzon in the Philippines and came to Hong Kong to reunite with my parents when I was 12. After graduating from Delia Memorial School (Hip Wo), I joined a garments firm as an administrative assistant.
But the 9/11 terrorist attack affected business and I was forced to look for another job. My friend asked if I was interested in teaching at her kindergarten. Luckily, I was accepted.
The first few months were a struggle. Because I had to raise my voice during lessons I suffered from a regular sore throat. I wanted to quit after three months but my head teacher was very supportive and the fact that I loved children made me stay.
