Details are expected in a fortnight of a deal between the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation and Wharf Estates Development on construction of a railway station at Wharf's Harbour City site.
The deal will provide a link between West Kowloon and the KCRC's planned Southern Link, an extension of the new West Rail to link with East Rail at Hunghom.
Deputy Secretary for Environment, Transport and Works Thomas Chow Tat-ming said the government now hoped to gazette construction early next month and for the railway to be operating by 2009.
The link will join Nam Cheong station, the present terminus of West Rail, with Tsim Sha Tsui East station, which opened last month.
'Strategically, the proposed station is not very important,' Mr Chow said. 'But the KCRC has observed the needs of the local community and the demand of the Legislative Council to have a station on Canton Road.'
