If the limited range of pricey spices on the shelf at your local supermarket fails to provide that special kick to your home-cooked curry, the New Delhi Store in Chungking Mansions has enough fragrant ingredients to satisfy even the most demanding of chefs. Tucked away at the rear of the ground floor among trinket shops and money-changers, the small family-run store supplies restaurants, airlines and lovers of piquant food with spices, pickles, sweets and tinned and packaged goods from India.

Opened in 1974, the New Delhi Store has enjoyed a surge in popularity after

a Chinese newspaper claimed ground turmeric could help to prevent Sars.

Other offerings include asefoetida, saffron, star anise, tamarind and fresh curry leaves, with prices starting at $40 for 400 grams. For individual tastes, manager Kulbir S. Dhala will mix a special curry powder containing your favourite spices in the correct proportions.

New Dehli Store is at shop 22, Chungking Mansions, 36 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Call 2369 3038 for free delivery on orders of more than $150.
