Updated at 5.37pm: The government said on Thursday it has completed transportation of dioxin-containing residues to Tsing Yi Chemical Waste Treatment Centre (CWTC) for trial incineration.
This was despite protests by 20 Tsing Yi residents - who said burning dioxin wastes would release toxic gases.
A spokesman for the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) said: 'The residues were successfully delivered from To Kau Wan in Lantau to CWTC early on Thursday morning.'
He stressed that precautionary measures were taken during transportation. It was done after midnight and by a route away from residential areas. Residues were also kept in drums.
During the residue delivery, about 20 Tsing Yi residents, district councilors and a legislator, Lee Wing-tat, protested the incineration. Some residents said burning dioxin-contaminated wastes releases toxic gases.
A number of them blocked vehicles carrying the residues. They were later moved away by police.
