Wild monkey troop scares bus passengers

Up to 40 wild monkeys triggered panic among passengers who had just got out of a bus near Lion Rock Country park yesterday afternoon.

The monkeys rushed towards the passengers at a bus stop in Hung Mui Kuk Road near World Wide Gardens.

One of the passengers made a 999 call. A police spokeswoman said there were between 30 and 40 monkeys near the bus stop when officers arrived. Although passengers were scared, no one was hurt in the incident, she said.

The monkeys fled up a hill before officers from the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department arrived.

Department fauna conservation officer Wong Che-lok said the monkeys had probably come down from a hill to find food.

'If people meet monkeys, they should hide their bags and must not eat or show the animals food,' he said.
