More than 1,000 syndicates broken up and six tonnes of narcotics seized
Mainland law-enforcement agencies have detained more than 13,000 people and seized more than six tonnes of drugs in less than four months, resulting in the price of some drugs doubling in areas such as Yunnan province .
Chen Cunyi, deputy director of the Narcotics Control Bureau, said the rising prices showed the anti-drugs campaign had been a success.
'Since the beginning of the anti-drug campaign, drug prices in some areas have risen dramatically because of the supply shortage,' he said in Beijing yesterday.
Mr Chen said the price of heroin in the Dehong region and Lincang city , along Yunnan's border with Myanmar, had jumped 126 per cent, as had the price of ketamine in Panjin in Liaoning province , Chongqing , Suining in Sichuan province and Xian in Shaanxi province .
From August 1 to November 22, the campaign - launched on July 1 - had broken up 1,045 syndicates involved in drug taking, trafficking and production.
