MR Xiao said yesterday that Ming Pao reporter Xi Yang might be tried in camera because the ''crime'' of which he is accused involves state secrets. Mr Xiao said at present, Xi's case was being handled by the State Security Bureau, and the Judiciary was not involved. ''Should Mr Xi come to trial, he would be allowed the right to have a defence lawyer,'' Mr Xiao said. But he added that according to Chinese law, cases involving state secrets need not be tried in public. Xi is accused of stealing state banking secrets.
