Hampstead Village

Why you can trust SCMP

The trend for 'boho chic' is old news in Hampstead Village. The north London enclave has long been the playground for arty and literary types. William Makepeace Thackeray, Charles Dickens, John Keats and William Wordsworth started a celebrity spot list that now extends to pop stars, actors and football players.

The intricate back streets and alleyways are a big draw for the curious shopper. Lined with small specialist shops, cosy cafes and traditional wood-panelled British pubs, they're unlike anything else in the capital.

Flask Walk, a cobbled passageway lined with cutesy shops brimming with good taste, is typical. One of its oldest fixtures is Keith Fawkes, the antiquarian bookseller at No. 1 (tel: 0207 435 0614). Don't try to find a book in here unless you have at least an hour to spare - the place is a maze.

Back in the 21st century, aromatherapy emporium Verde (tel: 0207 431 3314) is at No. 15. All preparations in this shop are hand-made and the strong zest from the Italian Lemon Hand-Cream is testament to the fact.

Hampstead has many big retail names - Jigsaw, Oasis, Warehouse, Gap - as well as more interesting designer zones. At Nicole Farhi (27 Hampstead High Street, tel: 0207 435 0866; www.nicolefarhi.com), you can expect to tussle with the likes of actress Emma Thompson and Oasis star Liam Gallagher for the season's top-sellers.

New arrival Ronit Zilkha (17 Hampstead High Street, tel: 0207 431 0253; www.ronitzilkha.com) is no less innovative. Signature pieces for autumn and winter, such as a copper silk taffeta floor-length skirt and matching wrap-around shirt, are sure to be a hit with her celebrity client list.
