The HONG KONG University of Science and Technology (HKUST) will establish Hong Kong's first Ministry of Education Key Laboratory.

It is a collaboration between HKUST and Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA).

In 2000, they set up a joint research laboratory to promote academic exchange and research collaboration.

A signing ceremony marking the establishment of Key Labs was recently held in Beijing. China's Vice-Minister of Education Zhao Qinping , HKUST president Paul Chu Ching-wu, senior vice-president of Microsoft Research Richard Rashid and MSRA managing director Harry Shum attended the ceremony.

In accordance with the terms of the collaboration agreement, MSRA will upgrade the five existing university joint research laboratories into Key Labs, which will conduct joint research projects in computer science and train young researchers.

In addition to HKUST, the other four labs are at: Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, the University of Science and Technology of China and the Harbin Institute of Technology.
