Symantec, known mainly for its anti-virus software, is looking to widen the audience for its other market-leading software, pcAnywhere, which is now in version 11.5.
Developed about 20 years ago, pcAnywhere has become a popular remote access software used by mobile professionals, small businesses and the information technology departments of enterprises.
The product was designed to enable a computer to remotely control another computer, where pcAnywhere has also been installed.
As a remote management technology, pcAnywhere minimises the costs of maintaining help desk support.
A user can take over the machine at his home or office to get files when needed, synchronise data, or swiftly diagnose or repair a problem.
Scheduled for release next month, pcAnywhere 11.5 extends the reach of its remote control functions from Windows PCs to Linux-based machines and handheld devices that run Microsoft's Pocket PC operating system - all using one management interface. The new edition's Web Remote function also enables a user to manage Windows and Linux machines installed with pcAnywhere from a Java-based Web browser.
Several new industrial-strength security options have been added, including up to 256-bit Advanced Encryption Standard algorithm suitable for use in government and financial institutions to protect sensitive information.
