guess who's not coming to dinner tonight - and why
The Foreign Correspondents' Club had promised its members a dinner and discussion tonight on 'Staying Fit While Staying Put', featuring a sports columnist (the South China Morning Post's own Tim Noonan), a stretching therapist and a fitness writer.
Now if you thought such a healthy topic was a bit of a stretch for the esteemed members of the FCC (aka the Fatties' Calories Club) you were spot on. The dinner has been cancelled due to 'last-minute circumstances'. Why do we suspect that's a euphemism for 'lack of interest'?
the lo-down on value creation
We see Harbin Brewery chief executive Peter Lo was among 12 worthies lauded as 'directors of the year' yesterday by the Hong Kong Institute of Directors. 'Our theme this year is to award value creation through corporate governance,' the institute's chairman Herbert Hui Ho-ming said.
Mr Lo, who had a front-row seat for the first-ever hostile cross-border takeover of a mainland company, certainly knows a thing or two about value creation. He and his management team not only picked the right horse - backing Anheuser-Busch over their partner, SABMiller - but profited from takeover options valued at $110 million (including $24.5 million for Mr Lo).
