This is one of the most popular places with young professionals, as it is located right in the heart of the Central Business District and combines residential with office and retail space. Centrally located beside the Bei Chen club in downtown Beijing, which offers free membership for a year. The estate is 18 months old and is built on 60 acres. So far 30 of the 55 houses in the scheme have been built, with the remainder due to be finished by the end of the decade. The 1,000 sq m showhouse sells for 28 million yuan.

A four-phase development on 320,000 sq m, including high-rise apartments, low-rise apartments and villas. Close to the fourth ring road and the airport expressway. Also in a predominantly expatriate area, with schools nearby. So far, 250 units have been sold, 60 per cent to foreign investors. The launch price was 9,000 yuan per sq m, which rose to 11,000 in around two months.

Purple Jade Villas has 104 townhouses in its third phase of the project, with half already sold. Average selling price is US$3,000 per sq m, with sizes ranging from 134 sq m to 946 sq m. Features a park with trees brought in from all over China, deer, swans and peacocks. It has a Thai-style hotel and club house, and is right next to where the 2008 Olympic Village  will be built.

Developed by US-based Hines, this project overlooking Chaoyang Park has a strong brandname behind it. Prices for the latest batch of apartments are averaging between 16,000 yuan and 18,000 yuan per sq m. Smaller units are about 180 sq m in size, while the bigger units go up to more than 300 sq m. When complete, the project will comprise 1,200 homes - both apartments and townhouses. Hong Kong banks offer financing at generous interest rates.

You can?t get more central than this. As part of the enormous Oriental Plaza development, the Tower Apartments are right in the heart of old Beijing, next to the Wangfujing shopping mall and a short walk away from the Forbidden City. The latest batch of serviced apartments, Centennial Heights, has just gone onto the market, with monthly rents ranging from US$1,200 to US$10,000. A variety of room types are on offer, ranging from 25 sq m studios to 270 sq m 4-bedroom apartments with 200 sq m patios.

One of the best known of the villa developments, with good quality houses, this place is very popular with expatriates. Beijing Riviera was built in four phases and Maple Place is phase three, with 209 units out of the total 600. Of this, 115 are villas and 32 are townhouses, with one block of serviced apartments. Shareholders include ING, Hongkong Land and Hong Leung. A 400 sq m villa rents for about US$12,000, while the smallest, at 240 sq m, goes for about US$5,000
