Michael Chan, Guest service officer, Harbour Plaza North Point Hotel
I studied hotel management in Switzerland, and did on-the-job training with the Hong Kong Tourism Board before I received my placement here. I enjoy helping guests with their arrangements and making them feel welcome. This hotel is like one big family. It is good to feel part of a team.
I may have to work on Christmas Day, depending on my shift roster. Guests are always in a happy mood at Christmas, and are likely to spend more money. It is a holiday and they all want to celebrate.
I have been asked if guests tip more generously at Christmas but, in fact, we are not allowed to accept tips at all. If guests wish to thank any staff member for services received, they can nominate us for a Shiny Star award, and when we receive enough nominations, we are awarded a badge in acknowledgement. It would make me proud to wear the badge, and I have nearly enough for one now.
If I am working, I can join the staff dinner afterwards. If not, I will enjoy a family dinner at home with my parents.
My wish for Christmas is to see our hotel guests laughing and having fun. That is enough for me. I have enough already: a stable life, a good job.
