Association needs $200,000 to continue its crusade against powdered substitutes
A group for breastfeeding mothers fears it will have to cease operating within weeks if it does not receive more funding.
The Hong Kong Breastfeeding Mothers' Association, which relies on private donations and membership fees, needs $200,000 to provide its services next year.
Since its foundation in 1996, the association, which has more than 200 members, has been actively promoting the advantages of breastfeeding to Cantonese-speaking mothers.
A fund-raising orienteering competition will be held at 9am on December 19 in Hong Kong Park as part of its efforts to keep the association afloat.
The services provided by the association include a 24-hour inquiry hotline, a website with information on breastfeeding, regular seminars and hospital visits, and a quarterly publication distributed to all public and private hospitals, health centres and clinics. Last year the hotline received 5,000 calls.
