LEGISLATIVE Councillor To Kun-sun has urged the Government to relocate the Yau Ma Tei fruit market, alleging its operation threatens the safety of children attending a nearby primary school.
Mr To claimed the market, which handles about 70 per cent of Hong Kong's fruit supply, was a nuisance and put Yau Ma Tei Catholic Primary School pupils at risk as boxes of fruit were piled high in the narrow streets during loading in the morning.
''It could be very serious if the fruit boxes accidentally fall down,'' he said, adding the problem had to be solved immediately.
''The headmaster of the school, Choi Kai-chun, had to suspend the school on the day before the Mid-Autumn Festival since the frequent loading work was too dangerous for the students to pass through,'' Mr To said.
Meanwhile, Yau Tsim District Board member Lai Wing-tak said the Government should give a firm schedule on relocating the market.
''The residents cannot stand the nuisance any longer as they mainly load the fruit at midnight from more than 30 cargo trucks,'' he said.
