Award recognises leadership ability and dedication to society

ERIC LI KA-CHEUNG and Betty Yuen have been selected as winners of this year's Beta Gamma Sigma chapter Honoree Award. They were selected for their demonstrated leadership abilities and their dedication to community service.

Dr Li is the senior partner of Li, Tang, Chen & Co, a well-established certified public accountant firm in Hong Kong. He was also a member of the Legislative Council from 1991 to this year and chairman of its Public Accounts Committee since 1995.

Mrs Yuen is managing director of CLP Power Hong Kong. She is the first ethnic Chinese appointed to this position in the company's 100-year history and the company's first female chief executive. Before her appointment as managing director in 2002, she was director of finance and planning with responsibilities for government relations and regulatory affairs, corporate strategy and planning, finance, accounting and legal matters.

Francis Lui Ting-ming, president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Beta Gamma Sigma chapter, said: 'They have exhibited outstanding leadership qualities in Hong Kong and contributed to the community as a whole. Dr Li has made a significant contribution to the political development of Hong Kong and the accounting profession. Mrs Yuen is a very well known businesswoman in Hong Kong. CLP is a very well-managed company. We think she has set a good example of what top managers can do for a company.'

A chartered accountant since 1978, Dr Li has held a series of prominent positions. He became president of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants (HKICPA) in 1994. He was named the first Accountant of the Year by the HKICPA in 1993 and received the first International Accountant Award from the Association of International Accountants in 2002.

Dr Li is a board member of the International Federation of Accountants and serves as court member, trustee, advice and adjunct professor of several local and overseas universities.

He is also active working with young people and serves as an honorary adviser to many student societies in the accounting and business fields.
