RENEGADE GENTLEMAN, Larry Carlton (GRP): Renegade Gentleman summons up visions of dirty English pubs, warm beer and cold English girls in tight skirts. It's John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. It's the Moody Blues, Chicken Shack, Savoy Brown and Fleetwood Mac with Peter Green.
For while guitarist Larry Carlton made his name as a cross-over pop-jazz musician, it would seem that in his heart he is back in the '60s when rock was ''rock'' and played by Englishmen with strong regional accents.
Carlton is joined by harmonica player Terry Macmillan who creates a compelling ''down-home Louisiana'' feel that drags the listener to crank up the volume. A fun album for late nights.
PAINT THE WORLD, Chick Corea (GRP): Since first hearing Chick Corea on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, he has irritated to the point of exasperation, and pleased to the point of producing a loopy smile.
Corea's acoustic piano work is never less than interesting, whereas his ''Elektric'' work has, at times, become bland thanks to thick synthesiser chords and long lines that seem to go nowhere.
Even so, at their most ''rocky'', Corea's Elektric band colleagues are often a roaring ensemble.
Here there is a little of both with a new line up that includes Eric Marienthal on reeds, Mike Miller on guitar, Jimmy Earl on bass guitar and Gary Novak on drums.
