THE MAINLAND'S telecommunications sector is flourishing, with further liberalisation measures and continuous economic growth set to fuel company expansion and drive customer demand.

Jeffrey Cheung, senior vice-president of China Wireless Technologies, said the mobile phone market on the mainland was expanding rapidly.

The mainland has about 320 million mobile phone subscribers at present and the number is expected to grow substantially, he said.

The mainland's mobile phone penetration rate is still relatively low compared to many other countries.

According to global research company International Data Corporation (IDC), the mainland's mobile phone penetration rate was only about 20 per cent last year.

In other places in the region such as Hong Kong and Taiwan, penetration rates have exceeded 80 per cent.
