Three robbers bashed a gold salesman and escaped with a bag containing about $1.2 million in gold ornaments in a roadside attack yesterday.
Mak Hin-fai, 52, suffered facial injuries in the attack in Cheung Sha Wan at about 10.30am as he was delivering the ornaments to Hunghom. It was the second roadside jewellery robbery in a week.
The men fled in a taxi, evading police by changing cars twice, and were still being hunted last night.
Police said the salesman was on the footpath of Hing Wah Street near the junction of Fortune Street when the robbers struck. 'They assaulted him and then stole his black bag containing gold ornaments,' a spokesman said. About 300 taels of gold ornaments, worth about $1.2 million, were in the bag. No weapon is thought to have been used.
The victim was treated at Caritas Medical Centre.
Officers stopped the first taxi in Sycamore Street in Shamshuipo but the trio, thought to be in their 30s, had already switched to another cab. The other taxi was found at the junction of Jordan Road and Nathan Road in Yau Ma Tei but the group got out in Mongkok.
