Officials canvass pro-Beijing politicians on elections for chief executive and Legco
Mainland officials have been canvassing the views of pro-Beijing politicians in Hong Kong about methods for electing the chief executive in 2007 and the Legislative Council in 2008.
The government taskforce on constitutional development could release its fourth report, which summarises public views received over a five-month consultation, as early as this week.
A number of pro-Beijing figures said mainland officials, including those from departments responsible for Hong Kong affairs, had sought their views on electoral reforms in recent months.
The former deputy director of Xinhua's Hong Kong branch, Zhang Junsheng , canvassed the views of pro-Beijing politicians during visits to the city in September and October.
Mr Zhang, who retired as Zhejiang University party secretary in July, is director of the advisory committee on economic development under the Zhejiang provincial government.
Peter Wong Man-kwong, a local deputy to the National People's Congress, said he had been approached by senior officials from agencies such as the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office and the NPC Standing Committee.
