The stakes have been raised in the bidding for the 10 lucky number eights rare stamp we are auctioning for Operation Santa Claus. Last night, the highest bid on the first day was an auspicious $88,888.88.
The once-in-a-century 80 pfennig stamp was issued at 8am, on 8/8/1988 in Blindheim in Bavaria, Germany. The town's postal code is 8888. The first-day cover of the rare stamp issue has drawn huge interest in Hong Kong after being donated by German Erwin Hardy. 'Let's hope the next bid multiplies it by eight,'' he said.
The auction closes at 5pm on Tuesday. Send bids by e-mail only with your name, address and phone number to [email protected]. The highest bid by 5pm each day will be published in the City section next day. The winning bid will be announced in the Post next Thursday. All proceeds go to Operation Santa Claus.
