Q How do you feel about the axing of the Canton Road station?
As a statutory corporation, the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation is required to balance social and public community considerations against a legal requirement to act in accordance with prudent commercial principles.
Since the incremental daily patronage is estimated to be only 17,000, there is no absolute need on transport grounds for the station - particularly given that the inclusion of a station at Canton Road would not be financially viable for the KCRC.
The corporation is, however, mindful of the fact that there is public interest in the building of a Canton Road station and therefore would be prepared to provide for it if a third party were willing to share the construction cost. However, the KCRC has never insisted that Wharf or any other interested party pay for a station. But given the huge commercial benefit the station, as an integral part of Harbour City, would bring to Wharf, we have invited them to contribute. The KCRC, for its part, will commit to spending $1 billion.
