Managing director Keith Kerr yesterday said the company was looking for development opportunities in key cities such as Shanghai and Beijing, while keeping large, second-tier coastal cities on the shopping list.

'The company is exploring a couple of projects but none of them are close to the deal,' said Mr Kerr, who will replace James Hughes-Hallett as chairman of Swire Properties next year.

The company unveiled the expansion plan as it broke ground for Taikoo Hui, its commercial development in Guangzhou that resembles Pacific Place.

Mr Kerr said Taikoo Hui, a four million square foot office-retail-hotel complex, is the company's first major mainland property project.

The company has a 97 per cent stake in the project while Guangzhou Daily News Group owns the remainder.

In Shanghai, Swire has a 10 per cent stake in a commercial project, Citic Square, in a joint venture with Citic Pacific.
