Fans are likely to miss out on a highlight of the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday because of a clash with international fixtures.
The Hong Kong Football Association is having trouble finding teams to take part in the annual Carlsberg Cup because of its timing.
February 9, the first day of the Chinese New Year when the four-team tournament usually starts, will be Fifa Day, which will see celebrations worldwide by football's governing body.
It also clashes with the World Cup qualifiers in Asia in which Japan and South Korea, teams who are frequent visitors to the Hong Kong tournament, will take part.
The association insisted yesterday negotiations were still underway to find a way of allowing the two-day event to go ahead.
'It is too early to say what will happen to the tournament. But we will make an announcement once the situation becomes clearer,' marketing manager Muse Cheng said.
