A BIRD hawker who is alleged to have been cruel to animals by putting 23 birds into four nylon bags appeared in Eastern Court yesterday. Ng Chi-wai, 50, has pleaded not guilty to improper conveyance of birds, omitting to provide water for birds and causing unnecessary suffering to a bird at the junction of Cross and Stone Nullah streets, Wan Chai, on October 12. He denied striking a Chinese francolin on the ground and then plucking feathers from it when it was alive and conscious. He also denied failing to remove an injured and ailing pheasant from healthy birds in the same nylon bag. Ng only admitted illegal hawking of wild birds. Magistrate Michael Hill adjourned the case until November 3 for trial.
